Content agency, Somethin’ Else is revamping its in-house post production facility at the company’s Brunswick Street HQ. Replacing standalone edit suites with a storage area network, the agency is also embracing file-based management and automation in a new workflow designed and implemented with the help of root6.
With a reputation for highly engaging content ranging from ‘Gardener’s Question Time’ to a record-breaking social media campaign for the 2015 BRIT Awards, Somethin’ Else was recently commissioned by Sky Arts to make ‘Guitar Star,’ a major new talent show for players of all ages and styles. Entrants will get to be mentored by some of the biggest guitar stars in the world and play at music’s most iconic venues.
The new Sky show is the driver for the company’s adoption of an end-to-end digital workflow as Somethin’ Else’s Head of Technology Paul Harvey explains.
“We wanted to move away from local drives in our Media Composer suits as new projects increasingly needed a collaborative approach with the requirement to quickly locate specific assets. We opted for 32TB Dynamic Drive Pool as our preferred online storage, with CatDV production management for fast asset browsing and searching by metadata. We have Synology nearline storage with an additional 30TB, and Xendata to manage our archive on LTO6 tape. With such a set-up we’ll be able to offer clients a highly efficient and fast turnaround service with secure and fail-safe back-up.”
In order to streamline operations still further, Somethin’ Else has specified ContentAgent, the file-based management and automation platform from root6. The CardAgent option will enable multiple users to speedily ingest card based media from a wide range of digital cameras and automate the transcoding into Avid editorial. For broadcast deliverables, the facility will use the AS-11 UK DPP standard, automated by the AMWA accredited ContentAgent with Vidchecker integration for Quality Control.
