Live streaming direct from a camera on location is nothing new. From sports to news and elections, viewers enjoy seeing live action as it unfolds. However, the way HD high quality content is delivered from the camera is coming of age.
The Zao product is two things. With an HDMI or SDi input direct from the camera, it bonds together multiple SIMs from multiple and different 3G or 4G mobile phone carriers to provide a single pipeline onto the internet. It is also an H265 encoder that is way more efficient than traditional H264. This means it can deliver SDI to the broadcasting centre with much lower latency and lower bandwidth requirements than traditional means – and will maintain a high quality picture resolution, even when the mobile signal becomes poor.
An SDi signal can be re-produced in full HD at the broadcast centre, with embedded audio, within 0.5 secs, over a combined bandwidth of 3-4Mb/sec. We believe this to be quite impressive!
No longer do you need expensive satellite connections, OB trucks or complicated technology to deliver full HD in real time from the camera. The Zao product (named, by the way, after a Japanese mountain) can either be camera mounted or can reside in its own mini rucksack that comes with the unit for ease of carriage. The Zao, weighing 900g, is a truly mobile transmitter.
The decoding software can be installed on a Windows server with an SDi output.
