Case Study – ITN Productions

ITN Productions removes bottleneck of backing up rushes with Rohde & Schwarz Spycerbox

With its combination of storage capacity, extreme high density and guaranteed data rates, Rohde & Schwarz Spycerbox is the enabler for highly efficient postproduction workflows in a variety of mission critical environments such as those found in feature films and high-end TV drama. Such benefits are equally significant in high capacity TV production environments as evidenced by its deployment in the post facility at ITN Productions.

ITN Productions’ output covers a huge range of material from TV programme making across factual, entertainment and current affairs, live sports, commercials and corporate video to VR. The in-house post production facility handles everything from ingest to delivery and currently processes more than 6000 hours of material annually across a diverse range of clients and platforms.

Underpinning its 160 TB of Avid ISIS shared storage feeding 60 suites is Rohde & Schwarz Spycerbox as Head of Post Production Olly Strous explains.

“When looking to refine our workflow we wanted to remove the bottleneck of backing up our rushes to Network Attached Storage and approached root6 for a solution. They suggested Spycerbox by R&S with four bonded 10GB Fibre connections going back to a Cisco 4500 switch. This storage acts as our tier 2, keeping all rushes live for the duration of our projects so it needed to be incredibly fast yet resilient.

We use our Spycerbox in a RAID 6 configuration which gives our data dependable security and protection. We ordered 196TB for the initial installation two years ago and have been so happy with it we have just ordered a further 384TB JBOD which, as it utilises our existing unit’s RAID controller, expands our capacity very cost effectively”

The post facility at ITN Productions started life a mere five years ago. Conceived originally as an in- house resource it has rapidly grown to a 60 edit suite facility with a complete complement of resources to allow the end-to-end post process to be completed under one roof. After a year of development the facility now also offers self-service ingest points using CardAgent from ROOT6 Technology. This automated process significantly expedites the backup and ingest of material including the uploading of rushes to ITN Production’s online platform for logging whilst providing job status information every step of the way.
