Rohde & Schwarz IBC Wall of Workflow

Rohde & Schwarz had a strong presence at this year’s IBC focusing on what they are well known for, ingest, mastering to encoding and monitoring to broadcast and test and measurement equipment for high-definition formats such as 4K.

You couldn’t escape IBC without crossing any of these acronyms covering industry formats and technologies, IMF (Interoperable Master Format), HDR (High Dynamic Range) and HFR (High Frame Rate) at IBC (International Broadcasters Convention) and R&S (Rohde & Schwarz) had their input & views on each of topical subjects along with their product range to reflect these.

The R&S stand was a wall of workflows, providing a walk though from acquisition and ingest, mastering, encoding then to multiplexing and playout, all powered by R&S.

R&S IBC 16

R&S has expanded its R&S VENICE ingest and playout platform to include the R&S VENICE Control application. R&S VENICE Control is ingest software for controlling complex multicamera recordings. It makes it possible to record up to 16 independent channels, these can range across the Venice HD channels or incorporate UHD channels via the Venice 4K. VENICE Control in an independent application which can be run via a network connection back to the VENICE servers, this is a positive move towards the new trend of remote working.

The R&S CLIPSTER mastering station proved to be well ahead of the competition again at this year’s IBC, it was clear to see that R&S have been focusing on HDR, expanded colour scales, HFR and localization workflows.

HDR brings it’s own challenges, are we talking Perceptual Quantizer (PQ) or Hybrid LogGamma (HLG), then these can be encapsulated in HDR-10 or Dolby Vision? Essential for any HDR mastering workflows Clipster now in-powers a full floating point processing and colour depth engine to ensure highly precise conversion within the brightness range. This is key when mastering content for multiple colour scales.

The R&S Storage Solutions are still providing central high-performance production storage, the SpycerBox Cell provides scalability at its best, the SpycerBox Ultra TL giving high-performance nearline for mid-term archive. R&S now offer Media Connect which allows Avid Media Composer workstations to take advantage of the SpycerBox storage while echoing the Avid filesystem giving the multiple Media Composer clients the benefit of working from the same Avid media and sharing Avid projects.

R&S PRIOS IP is a new member of the Rohde & Schwarz family of video boards. In addition to the conventional SDI interfaces, the board also provides 10 G Ethernet support for video over IP. Video IP was another popular topic at IBC, standards and manufactures adoptions were wide ranging across the show.

The R&S AVHE100 headend from Rohde & Schwarz offers exceptional picture quality for UHD and HD HEVC encoding, even at reduced data rates. To provide viewers with breathtaking visual effects, the Rohde & Schwarz solution enriches the transport stream with HDR ancillary data, this is quite key when the PQ & HLG discussion is so open.
